Madden NFL 19

Overview

Reviews

Madden 19 returns the primary focus where it belongs: that moment-to-moment gameplay between the end zones. It’s only true stumbling point is the lackluster story mode that fails to recapture the magic of the first, but that's entirely offset by the new player handling that once again leverages the power of the Frostbite engine. Most importantly, Madden 19 has finally cracked that slightly repetitive feel that can make it tough to go on, game after game. With Real Player Motion delivering a fluid on-the-field experience, and Franchise mode customization offering another level of realism, Madden is in a great place.

A stunning return to form for the annual football franchise – and one of the finest all-round Madden packages in years.

The franchise mode improvements are great, but owner mode remains a sore point. The biggest, most interesting update to Madden 19—Longshot: Homecoming—is also the most disappointing part of the game. And hardcore fans will notice niggling details, like the lack of run-pass option plays.

The first PC edition of Madden in a decade performs just like the console versions except the game simulation times in Franchise mode are about cut in half and the menus stutter a little less. Longshot cutscenes are also smoother, but not overly so. The PC version has mouse/keyboard support as well as a suite of customary graphics options, but it doesn’t support mods or have dedicated servers, so its advantage over the other versions is only slight.

Madden NFL 19 is ultimately the complete Madden of the current generation. Necessary changes to gameplay and Franchise Mode make it feel fresh and the improved visuals help complete the updated experience. There are still some issues with gameplay on the defensive side of the ball, but having the Real Player Motion helps in adding new ways not only to move the ball down the field, but celebrate.
