Shattered Haven has one strength, that being its variety of puzzling mechanics and locations. Sadly, the other aspects of the game are too mediocre to make it worth a solid recommendation, but maybe that's not what you're interested...

The gameplay itself is not all that engaging, but new mechanics, weapons and tools are added throughout the game, so I would not say that I was ever bored while playing. Nostalgia for this old style of gameplay might be the best reason for you to want to try this out.

These levels are basic environmental puzzles, tasking you with, say, finding the hammer in one house that lets you mend the bridge that lets you reach the weapon that lets you kill the greys. There’s a workmanlike simplicity to the core of Arcen’s game, one that lets down the powerful atmosphere suffusing it.

I don’t have a better way of making it work better, but it just doesn’t come together like I expected. The gameplay works and has pretty good combat, the environmental puzzles are smart if not a bit repetitive.

In all this is a niche little title that was an enjoyable game, it’s 2D nature allowed me to continue to play it on a long train journey on my net book easily which is something it usually can not mange, though I know there is a fan base that loves games in this style, as there is a large community for the games made in RPG maker programs...

With so many more polished games coming out at the $10 price tag, I will caution you. What you get here is a game that was created in a level editor and expanded upon. It does a lot of things quite nice, other things not so much. If you are that person looking for a decent maze game, this will do.

You'll forget many of its too-similar puzzles, and the joy of completing some of the better ones are dampened by the game's insistence on thinking for you. In the end, what you want most is for Shattered Haven to strengthen its nonverbal communication skills, put a firm hand on your shoulder, and say, "Go. You can do this."
