While the player that memorises the stats of all 800+ unit types will inevitably enjoy an advantage, a bit of commonsense goes an awfully long way here: recon diligently, and don’t advance without some form of anti-air capability close at hand. AirLand’s survival secrets are simply the survival secrets of 20th century ground warfare.

It’s a shame that Focus haven’t done more to ease people wanting to jump in to AirLand Battle who’ve bought the original game, but in all honesty this is worth the money, even if Focus don’t follow the same DLC plan they did before. Wargame: AirLand Battle is out now for PC.

Not since European Escalation have I had to work so hard for my victories, and with the addition of aircraft and the absurdly huge 20 player matches, a whole new layer of strategy and tactics has been added to an already exceedingly deep series.

And though its initially punishing difficulty and relatively weak campaign will put some people off, those who stick around and learn how to play will be returned three-fold with hours of cerebral, if somewhat stone-faced strategy goodness.
