EXCLUSIVE, NO LONGER I'll say it here straight off the bat...I don't own one of the latest generation of consoles, so when games are released as exclusives on a particular piece of hardware it does upset me a little. I know that for the most part that...
Still, Zombi manages to set itself apart, with its deliberate pacing, desolate atmosphere, and focus on survival. It might not be a Crown Jewel, but this undead romp through London is an interesting change of pace.
There’s parts of Zombi that are entertaining to play, while there are others that just fall apart. There’s nothing like Zombi when it comes to its survival elements, actually ensuring a sense of dread and tension for every step forward, until you get to its archaic and clumsy gameplay design.
Zombi is the textbook example of a game that needs a sequel. Within the trope-ripe grounds of the zombie shooter, it builds interesting NPCs, delivers genuine scares, and makes deaths mean something more than a respawn. With more exciting combat, Zombi might have been a must-own for horror fans. As it stands, it’s a fun game that does most things right, but constantly reminds you of its biggest flaw.
What's surprising, really, is that the whole game doesn't feel more compromised. ZombiU was so enthusiastic in its embracing of Nintendo's oddball console that it was easy to project its successes onto the platform. At £15 it's still well worth a look if you didn't experience the Nintendo original, but despite the leap to the next-generation of consoles the sad fact is that the Wii U edition remains the definitive one.
Zombi is hardly a deluxe version of ZombiU, with numerous bugs and few graphical improvements. It's still a good survival game, but feels outdated and misses the Wii U Game...
