LG Wing 5G

Hands on: For me, the Wing is fine as it is in terms of dual-screen usability, though it’d be nice to have a slightly taller second screen if LG ever plans on making a Wing 2. And maybe it could shed a few grams as well. For now, the Wing sits comfortably between conventional smartphones and foldable dual-screen phones, allowing practical dual-screen use cases while keeping its size and weight to a new minimum in this class. Even for a multi-tasking nerd such as myself, LG proved with this weird phone that I don’t need two full-size screens -- and I certainly don’t need a flexible display (yet).

Yes, it's weird and yes, it's expensive at $1,000 on Verizon. But the design isn't as crazy or pointless as it seems. After pushing through the initial learning curve, which does take some time, my experience with multitasking and recording video got a boost thanks to the Wing's unusual shape.

Hands on: The LG Wing 5G is still a fully functional phone without the swivel, albeit lacking some camera options compared to other flagship phones. The real competition will likely lie in price, though, and until we know how much the swivel functionality costs, so to speak, we won’t know how the LG Wing 5G really stacks up.

Hands on: While it might be hard to suggest someone goes out and pre-order one of these, there’s no doubting the Wing is an interesting handset with a unique look.

Hands on: I can’t say whether the LG Wing will be successful. There are still some software bugs to sort out, and with the price still unknown, it’s hard to say whether consumers or developers will be willing to take the risk on such an unproven design. But at the very least, LG has proven that it’s willing to experiment with what a phone can do and look like, and that’s a very encouraging thing to see.

Hands on: The LG Wing is genuinely exciting; it also isn't quite finished. The difference between our 2.5-starSurface Duo and 4-star Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 reviews largely comes down to the fact that the Z Fold 2's software feels finished, and the Surface Duo's doesn't. If the LG Wing model that hits US shelves later this year has all of the kinks worked out, it will be a heck of a cool phone.
