Those looking for an easy-to-mount wall speaker will find a lot to love with the Symfonisk frame, as it provides really great audio for its price. Of course, those with existing Sonos setups will get a lot more of it, but even on its own, it’s well worth it to get to furnish and elevate the sound of a given space. It’s also a promising continuation of a collaboration between Ikea and Sonos, one that shows the two brands are committed to finding more pleasurable ways to play your music now and down the line.

If the Symfonisk picture frame allowed you to display your own pictures, I’m certain it would be a massive hit. As it is, it should do well with those who live for Ikea’s Scandi style. If I had a budget of £200, however, and wanted Sonos sound in my living room, I’d go for a Sonos One, the Sonos Roam or Symfonisk bookshelf speaker.

The Sonos and IKEA Symfonisk Picture frame with Wi-Fi Speaker looks more wall art than a speaker, making it perfect for anyone looking for a device that blends in. Offering the same price and sound quality as the Sonos One SL, this is a good alternative – but the speaker is quite large and the choice of art panels available is quite limited.

If you’re not a fan of IKEA’s art style, then the Symfonisk Picture Frame probably isn’t for you. That’s where I find myself: I like the idea of subtly introducing Sonos audio into a room by hanging it on the wall, but without the ability to use my own choice of artwork I think I’d probably spend $179 on a Sonos SL instead. That sounds a little better than IKEA’s speaker, and quite frankly it blends into a room more readily too.

It’s purely about the form factor and aesthetic. If there’s a section of your house where a normal speaker just won’t work — or if you live with someone who’s not fond of having very obvious gadgets in every room, maybe this will do the trick. If you immediately jumped at the idea of wall speakers for home theater surround, the picture frame speaker won’t disappoint. You’d just better hope you and Ikea have similar taste in art.
