More demanding home users and small offices will prefer the DS220+ as it has no restrictions on available apps making it much more flexible than the DS220j. It delivers excellent performance across the board, its base 2GB of memory can be upgraded to 6GB and with a diskless model costing $299, is another winner for value – a Top 10 award goes to Synology.

When it came time to access my files, I never felt like I was waiting (short of attempting to stream high-end 4K Plex files). It is limited to two bays, so keep that in mind. If you want more failure backup or more storage space, you might want to opt for a four or five-bay NAS. But those cost more, and you still need to factor in the hard drives (which you buy separately). For everyone else, $300 plus hard drives gets you a great little NAS.

The Synology DS220+ is an excellent NAS for basic users. More than the hardware it’s Synology’s user-friendly DSM software that makes it a great buy. The innards manage to deliver reliable performance for basic users. We’d recommend Seagate Iron Wolf drives to use with Synology NAS.
