Toshiba's OEM XG6 comes packing the goodness of 3D TLC BiCS flash and a five-year warranty, but you can't buy it at retail. We'll see this design ported over to Toshiba's consumer lineup soon. Toshiba sells flash to other SSD vendors, so we'll see enthusiast-class models with the same flash soon. In the meantime, you can find this drive in an OEM laptop or desktop near you.

I'm strongly considering putting the XG6 into my personal laptop for a while. It's an older machine that only has a PCIe 2.0 link to the SSD so none of the XG6's performance deficiencies relative to the fastest drives on the market will make much difference, and the XG6 will probably offer the best battery life of any drive I have on hand.

The Toshiba XG6 is a single-sided NVMe M.2 SSD designed for client PCs, high-performance mobile devices, gaming and embedded applications. While the XG5 was the first Toshiba drive to leverage the company’s 64-layer BiCS 3D flash memory, the XG6 is the market’s first SSD built on the new 96-layer BiCS 3D flash memory. And like its predecessor, the XG6 also made good use of its new flash technology by making an impact on our performance charts.
