While the new art style is divisive, it brings with it improved combat and animations, making Nidhogg 2 great for multiplayer madness if you can gather together some friends in-person or online. However, as a single-player experience the Arcade mode quickly loses its appeal. Still, if you’re looking for your next pick-up-and-play party game, Nidhogg 2 can be a hoot.

Nidhogg 2 is all about intense action. The combat is fast-paced and never lets up. Mistakes can be punishing, but you will have a lot of opportunities to turn your fortunes around with a well-timed strike. If you want a game that will let you feel a...
The first Nidhogg was a game that demanded my attention. The moment I saw the eye-catching simplistic yet messy graphics, my interest was piqued. The elegance of the easy-to-pick-up controls blended with the fungibility of the one-on-one fencing...
Editor's note: We've now tested Nidhogg 2's Nintendo Switch port, and we're pleased to report it runs as smoothly as it does on other platforms. Plus, local multiplayer with a single Joy-Con each is, well, a joy. Unfortunately, a lack of online players...
Nidhogg 2 is a solid multi-player title that is bogged down by a handful of issues. The online play is currently a mess, the single player is lackluster at best and the new weapons do more harm than good. It's a testament to how rock solid the gameplay...

I never played the original Nidhogg. That's kind of puzzling considering the characters look like they came straight from a Colecovision game and I'm usually into games that look like the classics. Nidhogg is a fencing game where you go through each...
Nidhogg 2 isn't a drastic evolution from its predecessor, but it is a better game. It's deeper and more diverse with its stage setting and armaments. This sequel was never going to feel as fresh as its predecessor, but it's a smart enough variation on a theme that I can't see myself going back to the original Nidhogg much after this.
Despite its problems, Nidhogg 2 is spectacular, engrossing, funny, tragic, and dramatic in equal measure, and it will no doubt become another party game staple. Nidhogg 2 sacrifices simplicity for more options, and it doesn't prove to be a good trade. But when the underlying action is this good, I'll put up with the odd unwelcome dagger.
